Tangled With You

(A Stark Security Novella)

by J. Kenner

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author J. Kenner comes a new story in her Stark Security series…

He never expected to feel this kind of heat again…

FBI agent Ollie McKee is burned out on relationships. After a head-spinningly on-again/off-again relationship with his former fiancée, he’s been out of the dating pool for years. Now he’s focused on his career—and it’s getting more intense. Because Ollie’s ex was just kidnapped, and despite the rules, he’s resolved to work the case and find her.

Stark Security agent Trevor Barone knows better than to fall for a friend, especially one who’s straight. But there’s no denying the way his heart and body react around Ollie, especially after the last quick mission they worked together. He swore to himself to keep his distance. But now Ollie’s begging for his help. The woman he once loved—maybe still loves—has been kidnapped, and Ollie’s determined to bring her home alive. Trevor’s not about to let his friend down, but as they work the case together, the attraction and connection between them can’t be denied.

When the kidnappers turn deadly, Ollie and Trevor put their lives in each other’s hands. But can they trust the passion that threatens to consume them both?

An Exclusive Interview with J. Kenner

~with Jillian Stein, co-owner of 1,001 Dark Nights / The Blue Box Press

Can you tell us why or how you chose to write about this couple for your novella?

I’ve loved Ollie McKee since the first time he popped onto the page as one of Nikki Fairchild’s best friends in Release Me. Since then, he’s played a huge role in Stark World, loved and lost, guided Nikki through some rough patches, and completely blown up his life a time or two. As a secondary character in the world, I watched as he developed a close friendship with Trevor Barone, and in the process I realized that I didn’t fully know Ollie, because the chemistry between them was off the charts. And, of course, I had to write their story. They pretty much insisted!

Do you do anything to treat yourself when you finish writing a book?

Nothing terribly special, honestly. I tend to go all in once I’m past the 50% mark on a book, so my “treat” is cleaning out the mess that is my email inbox and the piles of mail and other stuff that has gathered! (And, yeah, there might be chocolate and whiskey and binge-watching a show!)

If someone were to narrate your life, who would you want the narrator to be and why?

Scott Brick. I love his voice. I’ve been an audiobook addict since the early 90s, and he has narrated many of my favorites.

What one piece of advice would you give an aspiring writer?

Don’t give up!

Can you give us a few lines from your work in progress?

For years, I’ve watched him. Waiting. Wanting.

For a lifetime, I’ve craved him. Needed him. And yet, I couldn’t have him. How could I when her shadow loomed between us? He’d loved her; I knew that. And he loved her still, even after he buried her.

But he’d never known about the lies. The obfuscation. The secrets.

How could I tell him what she’d done, knowing the truth would destroy him?

What’s your cure for hiccups?

Hold my breath and swallow 5 times

What mythical creature do you wish actually existed?

Unicorns!

What scene in this book was the toughest to write and why?

The first love scene! I’ve been wanting Ollie to have a romance for so long, I think *I* was nervous, LOL!

If you could watch one scene from this book be played out like a movie, which one would it be and why?

The first love scene (and the lead-in) because I love how it turned out and the emotional intensity would play great on screen.

What’s the worst thing you’ve eaten out of politeness?

I have no idea! I’m pretty good about just saying “no thank you!”

How did you come up with the title for this book?

I don’t remember, but I’m thrilled with how perfect it is for the story!
