Please Me
(A Stark Ever After Novella)
by J. Kenner
From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author J. Kenner comes a new story in her Stark Ever After series…
Each day with Damien is a miracle, each moment with our children a gift. And yet I cannot escape the growing sense that a storm is gathering, threatening to pull me away, to rip us apart. To drag me down, once again, into a darkness to which I swore never to return.
I have to fight it—I know that. And I am waging the battle with of all my heart. But it is Damien who is my strength, and we both know that the only way to push away the darkness is for him to fold me in his arms and claim me completely. And for me to surrender myself, once again, to the fire that burns between us.

I always love checking in with Damien and Nikki and this story line was a doozy (in a good way!). Is it ever challenging to keep their story fresh?
Oh, absolutely! I’ve told my readers for years that I won’t do a novella (and certainly not a novel) unless there’s a real story to tell. The novellas obviously are a story that are more limited in scope, but I’m not going to write a book just to visit the characters (though I love visiting them!). There has to be Something Going On.
So that’s the challenge.
The good news is that these characters have a lot going on, and so far there has always been a story to tell!
What song would you give Damien and Nikki and their theme song?
Oh, ask me a hard one, why don’t you?—I’m so out of touch with music! (In my defense, I tend to read books in audio, so instead of music it’s like, oh, Jamie & Claire or Eve and Roarke, or … well, you get it.)
So I don’t know about a theme song because, you know, I haven’t checked out enough options yet…but I asked my Facebook Fan Group for suggestions and an early one that popped up struck my fancy when I checked it out: Rhianna’s We Found Love. (thanks Anna!)
If you could dream cast Damien and Nikki for a movie, who would you choose?
Okay, so to be honest, I wouldn’t turn down a movie (well, actually I would if I didn’t think the show would match my vision!) but what I REALLY want is a TV series. I have a hard time seeing how all the meat in these books could be pared down to a satisfying two hours. But a series? I’m all over that!
As for who to cast, I’ve been asked that since Release Me came out and I still don’t have a good answer! I just don’t think in terms of celebrities! To me, Nikki and Damien would star. But that doesn’t really work! So I trolled the Internet to see if I said something insightful or witty or on-point in the past, and ran across this, apparently the last word on JK casting! https://www.signature-reads.com/2013/04/casting-call-introducing-the-dream-cast-of-the-stark-trilogy/
If you could go back and give yourself one piece of advice when you first started writing, what would it be?
Learn to dictate!! (That would be SO FREAKING HANDY.)
Can you give us a hint as to what you’re working on now?
One word: DAMIEN (Oh.My.God.)
OK. That was four words!
(And, honestly, I’m also finishing up Lost With Me. In case you missed it, Please Me is followed in October by Lost With Me, a full-length Nikki & Damien novel that will lead into another full novel: DAMIEN. (And – yes – DAMIEN will be told from the point of view of the man himself. I know, right? Yeah, that’s a thing! An awesome thing!)
