(Scorpius Syndrome/A Brigade Novella)

by Rebecca Zanetti

From New York Times bestselling author, Rebecca Zanetti, comes a new Scorpius Syndrome/A Brigade Novella…

Hugh Johnson is nobody’s hero, and the idea of being in the limelight makes him want to growl.  He takes care of his brothers, does his job, and enjoys a mellow evening hanging with his hound dog and watching the sports channel.  So when sweet and sexy Ellie Smithers from his college chemistry class asks him to save millions of people from a nuclear meltdown, he doggedly steps forward while telling himself that the world hasn’t changed and he can go back to his relaxing life.  One look at Ellie and excitement doesn’t seem so bad.

Eleanor Smithers knows that the Scorpius bacteria has and will change life as we know it, but that’s a concern for another day.  She’s been hand-picked as the computer guru for The Brigade, which is the USA’s first line of defense against all things Scorpius, including homegrown terrorists who’ve just been waiting for a chance to strike.  Their target is a nuclear power plant in the east, and the only person who can help her is Hugh, the sexy, laconic, dangerous man she had a crush on so long ago.

An Exclusive Interview With Rebecca Zanetti:

~ with Jillian Stein of Read Love Blog

I loved loved loved Hugh and Ellie! How did you choose them for this story?

Thank you so much! Ellie came to me first. And she’s so energetic and smart and fun that I thought a cranky but brilliant introvert would be her perfect match. Thus, Hugh turned into Hugh.

Your romances always have the perfect balance of heat, danger, and military/tech lingo. Do you ever find it hard to strike that balance?

My editing process usually is to find the balance. I love color coding everything, so I use Scrivner (writing software) to color code the romance, suspense, character journeys, and so on. Then it’s easy to look to the side of the computer screen (which has cool colored notecards) to make sure everything is in there.

Who would you cast as Hugh and Ellie in a movie?

Oh, that’s a fun one. How about Chris Helmsorth (in his Huntsman gig) and Jennifer Lawrence?

I know music plays a part in your writing process and you have a lot of playlists you’ve complied over the years. Have you ever heard a song and instantly knew you had to write a book about it?

Actually, no. I hear a song and know I want to write while listening to it, but I rarely know the actual words in a song. My husband took me to a Van Halen concert once, and when we left, he asked if I had known any songs. I said sure, that I had known Cannonball. He was like…what? Turned out the song is actually called Panema.

If you could only choose one song to play every time you walked into a room for the rest of your life, what would it be?

The theme song from Rocky. (Yes, I know Kristen Ashley said this on the 1001 Dark Nights cruise, but I had the same answer. I’d love to walk in and hear that song every time.)

Can you give us a hint as to what you’re writing right now?

Sure! I am finishing up edits on Winter Igniting, which is the next Scorpius Syndrome book and will release on February 20th. I’m also finishing edits on Vampire’s Faith, which is a brand new Dark Protector book that will release on June 19th.
