Tempted by Midnight

(A Midnight Breed Novella)

by Lara Adrian

Once, they lived in secret alongside mankind. Now, emerged from the shadows, the Breed faces enemies on both sides—human and vampire alike. No one knows that better than Lazaro Archer, one of the eldest, most powerful of his kind. His beloved Breedmate and family massacred by a madman twenty years ago, Lazaro refuses to open his heart again.

Sworn to his duty as the leader of the Order’s command center in Italy, the last thing the hardened warrior wants is to be tasked with the rescue and safekeeping of an innocent woman in need of his protection. But when a covert mission takes a deadly wrong turn, Lazaro finds himself in the unlikely role of hero with a familiar, intriguing beauty he should not desire, but cannot resist.

Melena Walsh has never forgotten the dashing Breed male who saved her life as a child. But the chivalrous hero of her past is in hard contrast to the embittered, dangerous man on whom her safety now depends. And with an unwanted—yet undeniable—desire igniting between them, Melena fears that Lazaro’s protection may come at the price of her heart….

An Exclusive Interview With Lara Adrian:

~ with Jillian Stein of Read Love Blog

Lazaro and Melena are a wonderful couple and had a fast and intense connection that was phenomenal to read. What made you choose them for your 1,001 Dark Nights novella?

Thank you! When Lazaro Archer first appeared in the series (TAKEN BY MIDNIGHT, Book 8) I hadn’t intended him to be anything more than an interesting secondary character. But the reader reaction to Lazaro and to the devastating loss he suffered in that book was overwhelming. Everyone wanted me to write a story for him! I was thrilled to have that opportunity as part of the 1001 Dark Nights collection.

As for Melena Walsh, his heroine in TEMPTED BY MIDNIGHT, I knew it was going to take someone who’d known Lazaro from before (however briefly) and who was probably the one woman who could break through all of his darkness and his defensive walls to touch the heart of a good man who deserved to find love again.

Your Midnight Breed Series is a huge fan favorite and many of the fans have gotten the Breedmate tattoo. What was your reaction when fans first started tattooing the symbol?

Totally surprised and incredibly honored! And I’m also impressed by all the creativity some people have incorporated into their designs.

The Midnight Breed Series spans many years and has many characters and relationships. It’s truly amazing and I love all the intricacies. How do you keep track of all of it?

I have an ongoing story bible that I maintain in WriteWayPro while I’m writing (full disclosure: my husband is the developer of this software). I also published most of my story bible into THE MIDNIGHT BREED SERIES COMPANION, which I frequently refer to while I’m working.

You also write historical romance at Tina St. John…is it difficult at times to transition from paranormal to historical?

It’s been quite a while since I’ve actively written historical romance, but I don’t find it difficult to transition from one type of writing to another. If anything, it’s refreshing! I research different topics, of course, and there are differences in word choices in my prose, but my voice is essentially my voice no matter what I’m writing. I love many different genres—in fact, I’m looking forward to expanding into straight contemporary, romantic suspense, commercial thrillers and other things in 2015 and beyond.

You recently remodeled a home on the coast…what is more difficult, writing a book or remodeling?

Ha! Don’t get me started on shoddy contractors. Our renovation still isn’t finished. Since I’ve never wanted to kill anyone while I was writing a book, I’m going to say renovation is the more difficult undertaking. At least when I’m writing a book, I have no one to blame but myself if things go fubar!

You are wonderful about traveling to conventions and events…what are your absolute travel essentials?

I love attending conventions and meeting readers! The biggest essential I’ve learned the hard way is to pack as light as possible – as in, one piece of luggage, period. My must-haves (aside from my cell phone, laptop and Kindle) are earplugs for sleeping in noisy hotels, Vitamin C to ward off airport bugs, and flip-flops for schlubbing around in my downtime. And the most important essential of all: Go with the goal of having a good time!

What authors do you enjoy reading when you get a chance to spend time with a book?

So many! I always hate this question because I have countless author friends whose work I love, and I don’t want to leave anyone out. Instead, I’ll cop out and just give you my recent book list of authors I don’t know: I just finished reading Jodi Ellen Malpas’s ONE NIGHT PROMISED. I’m currently reading Kristen Callihan’s THE HOOK UP. And I can’t wait for BECOMING CALDER by Mia Sheridan (never read anything by this author before, but an early review on Goodreads made me one-click with zero hesitation).

You’re fantastic with fan interaction on social media. Is there a certain schedule you follow to carve out time during your day to spend on your Facebook and twitter?

I wish I could play on Facebook and Twitter all day! I have so much fun connecting with readers, authors and other folks on both of those social networks. I also have a rather unhealthy addiction to Pinterest – all those pretty pictures and great DIY tips are crack to the magpie in me! I don’t have a set schedule, other than I try to keep an eye on things regularly and pop in as I can. And I have help on Facebook. My stepdaughter, Heather, does a great job of making sure we have fresh content every day and fun giveaways for fans.

Do you have any cheesy movies you will watch any time they’re on TV?

ELF. No matter what time of the year, it’s a rare day that I can bypass Will Ferrell in a green jacket and yellow tights, waxing rhapsodically about Santa and sugar.

We are so excited to have you on board for the 2015 1,001 Dark Nights author line-up…can you give us any hint on who that novella will be about?

Thank you! I am so excited to be part of the 2015 lineup! My novella will be another October release. I’ve already got my title (and totally gorgeous cover!). You’ll meet the hero of STROKE OF MIDNIGHT and possibly pick up a clue about that story in TEMPTED BY MIDNIGHT. 🙂
